Top of the Food Chain

The Dreadnought Class, for all races in the Firestorm universe, represents a new phase in the conflict surrounding the storm zone; an escalation of hostility that can only be responded to with overwhelming, decisive force. Each Dreadnought is the cutting edge of design and armament, the newest wave of engineering that sets the precedent for the coming conflict, and the Relthoza Apex Class Dreadnought is certainly no exception.

We wanted a name that would suit the superiority the ship possesses in the minds of the Relthoza admirals, hence the Apex class; the Apex predator among the stars. The Apex class is the pinnacle of the Relthoza combat fleets, the supreme predator in the starship food chain.

The question was; how to design a Dreadnought that was as ferocious and menacing as its peers, yet retained the sleek vertical nature of the Relthoza fleet? That was the quandary I was faced with, and I hope the result matches the intention.

A massive vertical hull matching the style and layout of the frigate, flanked by twin side fins bristling with weaponry and fighter bays. The Apex may not have the experimental weapon systems of The Directorate or The Sorylian Dreadnoughts, but its imposing mass and jagged nature do enough to strike fear into anyone who faces it in the heat of battle.

I thought maximising the use of the vertical plane by splitting off the shape into several vertical blade like structures would give it the bulk required without detracting for the Relthoza’s unique aesthetic, and the extra division of surfaces would give ample room for the ship’s manifold armaments and fighter bays. I hope the final design satisfies the loyal admirals of the Relthoza Navy, as well as the many collectors and painters out there, I certainly had my share of fun making it for them.
