Russian Coalition

Russian Coalition

The might of the Russian Coalition’s military has always been mainly concentrated on their land forces, and given the vast swathes of territory they control this is no surprise. Their armoured forces, therefore, had to represent the staggering force that the Russian Coalition could bring to bear against their enemies. While they may not be the most advanced nation in the world when it comes to their armoured technology, they are the most numerous.

The mass-produced feel and the heavy lean towards the industrial structures of their ships was the best way, we felt, to give the land forces their plentiful feel. A further means to differentiating the land forces from the Russian Coalition naval forces was the basic use of shapes; the navy, in most cases, is a set of circles within triangles – with the land force, the blocky square replaced the angular ship design, giving these vehicles a terrifying mass.

The Russian land ship is a sprawling mass of right angles and embedded circles; it’s a mix of chaos and order cobbled together into a frightening means of mayhem on the battlefield. The use of interleaved wheels was a deliberate choice to differentiate the Russians from the other nations’ land forces. It also carried a lot of functional and aesthetic meaning behind it, the overabundance of individual wheels gives the rolling juggernaught the numerous feel that we wanted to give the land forces, as well as functioning as the basis for the land version of the ablative armour MAR. On sea this was a nice set of staggered panels that clung about the waterlines of the ships, but on land it is represented by the redundant wheel design. Should the landship sustain enough damage to the wheels, the outer layer can simply be shed from the axle and the rolling beast can continue onward.

The medium tank is an interesting little amalgam of different influences within the broad Russian aesthetic. It carries the same basis for the landship – a square frame and interleaved wheels, but it’s angular sloping sides and broadside weapons are more a mirror of the naval designs than the wide and flat landship. This emphasises the faster nature of the tank over its larger cousin, much in the same way the visible armoured radiator on the front of the vehicle does.

The Medium tank is simple and effective, and so it’s easy to see how hundreds of these vehicles can be built and crewed to roll across the wide steppes in huge formations, ready to destroy any threat to the glory of the Russian Coalition.

Like many of the bombards in Dystopian Wars the Russian Coalition bombard is, at its core, a retrofitted medium tank. Using the chassis as a basis, a wide platform has been erected on the top of the vessel to house a set of powerful mortars that are ready to rein death and destruction upon any unsuspecting enemies.

The choice to make it a set of multiple smaller mortars rather than the massive barrelled guns that many other nations boast was partly due to the rules, but also to reinforce the overall feel of the numerous nature of the Russian land forces. To achieve this, we have used multiples over single objects in much the same way as the wheel design.

The small tanks for the Russian Armoured Battle Group were one of the most fun units to make. We’d always loved the mad design of the Russian Tsar Tank, but using it as a template for the larger vehicles was proving to be unviable. Consequently, our tiny little fellow became the successor to one of Russia’s most creative real world armoured units, while the wheeled nature was all that passed upwards.

The Tikhvin Class Small Tank has two massive wheels and a tiny set for turning at the back, all fixed around a monstrous cannon between them and two mortar tubes flanking the wheel-arches. It’s a lot to fit onto such a tiny object without making it too busy, but I hope we’ve achieved that goal. In house, the model has become one of our favourite small tank tokens to date.
