Zenian League

To the galactic south of the Dindrenzi Federation lies the vast space controlled by their allies the Relthoza. Most Dindrenzi believe that Relthoza society follows a basically feudal pattern. One of the primary vassal states within the Relthoza Empire, sharing a short border with Dindrenzi space, are the even stranger Vo’Nar. What exactly the relationship between the Relthoza and the Vo’Nar is cannot be fully explained, but when their masters go to war many Vo’Nar vessels sail with them.

The Vo’Nar differ greatly from most other sentient species humans have encountered. Virtually everything created by this strange species is organic in nature, either surgically altered or genetically fashioned to fit whatever need arises. Some speculate this is due to a natural proclivity on the part of the Vo’Nar, a religious or philosophical choice, or a desire to avoid disrupting the environments in which they live.

The Vo’Nar vary wildly in personal appearance; whether due to a naturally differentiated caste system within their species or to conscious biological manipulation is unknown. The few individuals who have had contact with human representatives are roughly 1.5 metres tall, bipedal, with long, spindly limbs and fingers. Swathed in dull-coloured robes, not much more can be discerned about them. There have been sightings, however, of much larger specimens, some almost three times as tall and much bulkier. These are thought to be either warriors or workers.

The Vo’Nar travel through space on massive living ships. Rather than single organisms, however, these ships are rather floating ecosystems, much like ocean reefs. Little is known about any of their ship systems, from propulsion and life support to sensors and weaponry. No mechanical elements are visible from outside inspection, and no human has ever seen the inside of such a craft. Most external weapons fire emanates from blisters or swellings along the dorsal flanks of the ships. Ammunition for these weapons are massive chitinous shells that exude an acidic substance as they fracture upon impact with their target.

However their ships are created, the process must not vary greatly by the size of the creature, as almost all Vo’Nar vessels are much larger than similar classes of other races. In addition, each one is armed with a signature Vo’Nar weapon – a sort of moist-looking orifice that spits out a semi-sentient spore or seedpod. This ordnance, while short-ranged, is not stationary like a standard mine, but rather floats gently along, homing in on targets of opportunity within their limited range. Most races tend to avoid Vo’Nar ships whenever possible, although the caravan fleets of the Cheyga will not pass within sight of a Vo’Nar vessel without attacking. The reason for this is currently unknown.

Until recently the Vo’Nar were little more than rumour to the majority of the Dindrenzi Federation. The Legislatorial Governor of the Moore Systems apparently formed some sort of independent treaty with the aliens, exchanging foodstuffs and energy for unknown considerations and material within Vo’Nar space. Several times recently this alliance has brought the Relthoza into the Dindrenzi Legislature in support of the Moore System against the Rense System delegation. As the Dindrenzi accrue victory after victory within the Storm Zone however, the Vo’Nar have become more prevalent within Relthoza armadas, even serving occasionally with other Zenian League ships.
