Hawker Industries

The honourable Hawker Industries is one of the best-known of the Terran Alliance’s great corporations. It was once one of the largest industrial and commercial concerns in human space, dwarfing even the great corporate powers that would become the Directorate.

Hawker was virtually synonymous with early human exploration of what would become the Terran Hub. Hawker-designed long-range colony ships carried tens of millions of colonists and soldiers on those first voyages of exploration and settlement. Hawker’s engineers also had a hand in establishing the Satellite Charter’s crucial communications network, designing and building some of the great signalling platforms and hauling the materials needed for their construction to distant locations.

Over time, though, Hawker’s great size and prestige led to a degree of complacency setting in. Funded by large Terran government contracts, the company scaled back its research budgets in favour of turning out well-tried designs that would always have a market. Aside from the retrofitting of Fold Space drives, Hawker did not engage in much development of its increasingly antiquated ships.

Hawker also missed out on lucrative contracts for the exploration of the Outer Reach, its basic designs proving less capable in the hostile regions beyond the Storm Zone. After the second Secession War and the independence of the Outer Reach, Hawker’s fortunes slumped to their lowest point, as the Terran Alliance’s economy sagged.

However, under a succession of resourceful new CEOs, Hawker began to rebuild. The Terran Alliance’s new ‘Dresden Stream’ colonial expansion toward the galactic core created a new market for Hawker’s ships. In the meantime, the company sought to make up for its technical deficits by establishing solid relations with some of Terra’s long-time alien allies and newer associates, especially the Sorylians, Xelocians and Saurians.

Hawker’s old designs, jokingly nicknamed ‘ironclads’ by many Terran officers due to both their solid construction and unsophisticated technology, proved remarkably suitable for upgrades and retrofits of modern systems. Just prior to the outbreak of the new Dindrenzi War, the Terran government had contracted Hawker to carry out a modernisation program of many older warships to bring them up to current first-line standards.

The company also found itself courted as a key associate by none other than former Charter President Anton Kurak. Hawker’s extensive business relations with many friendly alien species proved to be of enormous help to Kurak in building his grand Alliance.

Hawker’s importance to the Alliance of Kurak extends to more than just diplomacy. An entire division of the corporation’s security forces, known as the ‘Hunters’, serves as Kurak’s own intelligence force, and has undertaken a number of dangerous assignments, some taking them deep into Dindrenzi space. It is by their actions, rather than TerIntel, the official Terran secret service, that Kurak gained his intelligence – sketchy and inconclusive though it was – on the coming Dindrenzi invasion.

The advent of the war itself has utterly transformed Hawker’s fortunes. The vast shipyards and factories that dominate its home system – also called Hawker – are working at full blast for the first time in decades. Hawker is modernising old Terran naval ships and turning out new-built vessels to make up for the many losses sustained during the first enemy strikes. All over Terran space, long-mothballed Hawker facilities and ships are being reactivated as the mighty old corporation begins to flex its industrial muscle once more.

Hawker’s warships, which equip its corporate fleets as well as some Terran Satellite Charter Armada units, can easily be distinguished from other Terran designs. Their broad, spear-shaped hulls are heavily constructed compared to more modern Terran vessels. They date from a time before the wide adoption of Dispersion Shield technology, when a strong outer shell was the only defence against weapon damage and micro-debris impacts alike.

As a result, when shielding systems were retrofitted to Hawker ships, the generator vanes were mounted externally, to avoid compromising their hulls, which still perform a vital defensive role. These glinting vanes give Hawker’s ships an even more distinctive visual appearance, acquiring them a new nickname in the process – ‘dragonflies’.

Similarly, the weapon systems mounted on many of Hawker’s vessels hark back to an earlier time. Many older Hawker warships mount large numbers of torpedo tubes as their primary armament, as they were built before the acceleration massdrivers common to modern Terran designs became small enough to be mounted en masse in standard gun turrets.

However, the adaptability of Hawker’s ships extends to the weaponry they can carry. The mighty old Excelsior battleship in particular now carries a fearsome array of weaponry sufficient to stand up to even the most modern enemy vessels of similar size.

Hawker’s corporate flotillas are playing a key role in the Terran defence of the Storm Zone, both as distinct battle formations and co-ordinators of Kurak Alliance fleets. One incident, however, has given Hawker’s forces a new objective – that of vengeance.

During the opening stages of the Dindrenzi assault the Iron Salvage system, Hawker’s largest Storm Zone facility, fell to a surprise attack mounted by an overwhelming number of Dindrenzi and Directorate warships. In the vanguard of this attack were flotillas belonging to Works Raptor, intent on capturing the valuable base and plundering the resources of their old rival.

Hawker’s current CEO, Samantha Camm, has issued orders to retake Iron Salvage at the earliest opportunity. The system now lies quite deeply behind the main warzones, but nonetheless, Camm is working hard behind the scenes to organise a powerful counter-strike on the enemy forces occupying Iron Salvage when the time is right…
