Kicking off this week’s blog entries, the new Dindrenzi Patrol Fleet box set is bearing down on Fathom’s Reach, rail-guns fully charged!
In this introductory set, the long-feared Nausicaa Class Battleship is joined by two all new hull designs – the Secutor Class Cruiser and the Thraex Class Frigate. Uncompromising as ever, Fleets of these Dindrenzi vessels are raining death upon Alliance of Kurak forces across the Storm Zone.
The vessels that make up these Patrol Fleets are characteristic of Dindrenzi ship design in both form and function, making them an ideal starting point for an aspiring Dindrenzi Admiral to learn the optimal tactics for their navy.
NOTE: We have also included the components needed to convert one Cruiser into a Heavy Cruiser, allowing you to field a mixed Cruiser squadron.
All three hulls are essentially comprised of a single gargantuan weapon, surrounded in tough armour plates and driven by powerful engines. Warships to the core; what these vessels lack in subtlety is made up for in brute firepower.
The powered rails that drive each ship’s principle armament run a significant proportion of the vessel’s considerable length. Current supplied from enormous generators hurls solid slugs the length of these rails, reaching unthinkable velocities and enormous kinetic energies. This makes Dindrenzi weaponry devastating across ranges the other races cannot hope to match.
Taking full advantage of this, Dindrenzi naval doctrine focuses on first strike tactics. Aggressively pounding the enemy with relentless fire from the onset of battle, their foes will be crippled and their formations broken before they can even bring their weapons in to firing range.
Supplementing this practice, the hulls of Dindrenzi vessels are plated in thick layers of ablative armour, easily deflecting whatever long-range fire the enemy can hope to muster. Should the enemy crack through this armoured shell, the vessels are relatively fragile. However, if the gunnery officers make proper use of their ‘Arcbolt’ rail-guns the enemies’ ships should be neutered long before the Fleet is at risk.
Eschewing the energy shielding favoured by the Kurak Alliance for layer upon layer of composite armour plates, the Nausicaa Battleship is an incredibly tough hull to crack. Although less manoeuvrable than other vessels of its designation, the raw firepower of the Battleship’s Type IX Arcbolt rail-gun is more than enough to compensate. The centre-piece of many fleets throughout the Storm Zone, the Nausicaa is one part sledgehammer to one part artillery piece and there are few vessels in the sector that can withstand its firepower for long.
The extra agility afforded the Secutor Cruisers by their stripped down hulls and powerful thrusters allows them to ensure that they always have a valuable target lined up in the sights of their rail-guns. Able to effectively hound their prey, driving slug after devastating slug through their defences, the Secutors are the deadliest vessels in this lethal fleet.
However, the single-mindedness of the Cruisers’ design can leave them vulnerable, particularly if outflanked. To this end, the Thraex Class Frigates are often used in a defensive, counter-attacking role. Any enemy that seeks to out-manoeuvre the cumbersome Battleship or evades the fixed-arc firepower of the Cruisers will be met with a storm of high-velocity slugs from these smaller vessels. While not as nimble as other ships of their class, their combination of speed and range means they can deliver deadly firepower wherever it is needed at a moment’s notice.
Above you can see the Murmillo Heavy Cruiser. Equipping the Secutor hull with additional armour plates, extra gun racks and a reinforced engine section makes for one of the most fearsome vessels in the galaxy. Combining an impenetrable hull with monumental firepower, the distinctive silhouettes of a Murmillo squadron is enough to make even the boldest Captian tremble.
Heralded by a rain of rail-gun fire, Patrol Fleets from the Dindrenzi Federation are striking like lightning bolts across the war front. Leaving only drifting hulks and conquered worlds in their wake, you can only hope they give you time to surrender!
