Intro and Story written by Craig Gallant.

In 2008, the men and women behind the Sarcastic Gamer video game community started a fund raiser called Extra Life. This was for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer in honour of Tori Enmon, a young lady who was lost to acute lymphoblastic leukemia earlier that year. 1600 participants played video games for 24 hours straight, and raised $115,000, 100% of which went straight to hospitals, thanks to an innovative donation process that sent all funds directly to the children’s hospitals chosen by the participants. Each year since then the number of participants has continued to grow, as has the money raised. In 2010, through the efforts of gamesalute.com, board gamers, war gamers, and card gamers around the world were brought into the effort, and our podcast, The D6 Generation, joined the fray with Team Game Salute. This fall over 4000 participants raised over $1,100,000, now going to children’s hospitals for all causes all over the world!

This year I teamed up with Spartan Games to bribe gamers around the world to donate to this incredibly worthy cause. Neil, and the entire Spartan Games team, offered to help me in this by offering to post a short story featuring the number one donor as a character in the game of their choice, and have Sally paint a portrait of the donor as this character in the story. So many people responded so generously that I actually rose into the top ten fund raisers globally (briefly), and eventually settled at a very respectable 18th. To thank all those who donated I decided to widen the prize pool a little bit . . . and now every person who donated appears in this story, somewhere.

Now, a quick request. Because over 40 people donated . . . that’s a lot of named characters (and boats) for a short story . . . and, because they were from all over the world, the names do not really cleave too closely to the actual name conventions of the Uncharted Seas . . . so please forgive any jarring discrepancies . . . I hope you enjoy the story, and join us next year for another 24 hours of playing games and Healing Kids!
